The ideal way to squat, in general, is to set feet slightly wider than shoulder width, feet facing forward (w/maybe the slightest turn out, I mean miniscule amount), neutral spine, head facing forward, not looking up or down. Our glutes are some of the strongest muscles in our body, and work best through a hip that has been set up correctly. With feet turned out, you've already lost the ability to create that torque, so your low back has to pick up that extra force. OP, it was easier and less stressful on your back once you turned your feet in, because if your feet are more straight-forward you can generate torque at the hip. This can be directed at OP and whoever else wants to read it.
